Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and one-time lawyer to Donald Trump, is recovering in hospital after a serious car crash in New Hampshire. The 81-year-old was injured on 30 August when the SUV he was travelling in was struck from behind near Manchester.
The collision occurred near the scene of a separate domestic violence investigation, prompting speculation about Giuliani’s involvement. While his condition has been confirmed, details about the woman at the centre of that investigation remain unclear, raising questions about how the two incidents intersected.
The Crash in Manchester
According to a statement from New Hampshire State Police, troopers were responding to a domestic violence report on the southbound side of Interstate 93 shortly before 10 p.m. While officers and fire crews were on scene, a two-vehicle crash unfolded across the motorway on the northbound side, involving Giuliani’s rented SUV.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged after careering into the central median. Emergency personnel attending the domestic violence call witnessed the crash and crossed the motorway to provide aid. Giuliani, travelling with his spokesperson Ted Goodman, sustained a fractured thoracic vertebra along with injuries to his arm and leg, The Washington Post reported. Doctors say his condition is stable but that he will require a back brace and weeks of rehabilitation.
The Domestic Violence Victim
Police have confirmed only that a woman had flagged down help earlier that evening and that troopers were already investigating her complaint when Giuliani’s crash occurred nearby. Officials stressed that the two events were separate.
However, Michael Ragusa, a former New York City council candidate and Giuliani ally, claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that Giuliani briefly stopped to help the woman and called 911 before continuing his journey. Authorities have not corroborated this account and maintain that Giuliani’s involvement was limited to being caught in the unrelated crash.

The statement said he was traveling on the highway and a car hit him at speed from behind.
He wasn’t getting in his car and he wasn’t hit from the front driver’s side and I doubt he drives a car like either one of these.— A K Noorian (@tutueme) August 31, 2025
Does any of this sound weird to you?
His vehicle was struck directly after assisting the young lady.

Alleged Victim of a Domestic Violence Incident. DID the alleged victim of domestic violence give you permission to put this in the only statement you will make?
Simply bringing that point up in your statement creates openings and reading between the lines theory opps. Why even…— Silver Queen (@terriesilver) August 31, 2025
Hospital Treatment and Recovery
Giuliani was taken to a local trauma centre, where scans confirmed the spinal fracture. He remains under observation for pain management and to prevent secondary complications. His son, Andrew Giuliani, and members of his security team have visited him, while aides told The Washington Post that he is in ‘great spirits’.
Doctors have ruled out immediate surgery but say rehabilitation will be necessary to restore mobility. His head of security, a trained nurse, has been closely involved in his care.
Reactions and Speculation
The crash sparked widespread discussion online, including false claims that Giuliani had died. Outlets such as Reuters and the Associated Press quickly confirmed he survived and is receiving treatment.
Observers note that Giuliani remains a divisive figure in American politics, both for his leadership during the September 11 attacks and for his later role in challenging the 2020 election result. His prominence has left him particularly exposed to speculation and misinformation during crises.
Outlook
Giuliani is expected to make a recovery, though his rehabilitation will take time. The incident has drawn attention not only to his health but also to the unusual fact that it happened within sight of an ongoing domestic violence investigation.
The woman involved in that case has not been publicly identified, and police say enquiries are continuing. For Giuliani, the priority is regaining mobility and moving past what has been a sudden and dramatic ordeal.
