Full Story

Authorities in Darlington have raised a significant warning regarding the presence of counterfeit goods in both local shops and online marketplaces. This alert stems from collaborative efforts between Darlington Borough Council and trading standards officers who aim to safeguard consumers, particularly as the Christmas season approaches.

In the past year, council enforcement teams have undertaken proactive measures, resulting in the confiscation of numerous counterfeit perfume products within the town centre. These items were designed to closely mimic the packaging of reputable brands but are, in reality, far from authentic. The trading standards division has expressed mounting concern over these counterfeit fragrances, which have been discovered to contain unverified and potentially hazardous substances. Such chemicals pose serious risks, including skin irritations and allergic reactions, as well as toxic effects.

Dawn Taylor, a trading standards officer for the council, has spoken out regarding the deceptive nature of counterfeit goods, particularly during challenging economic periods when residents are attempting to cut costs. She stated, “We know, for many Darlington residents, it’s a tough time when they are trying to save money and spend less, but buying counterfeit goods doesn’t save you any money. In fact, it can cost you.”

Taylor elaborated that these inferior products are often not only of substandard quality, leading to malfunction and rapid deterioration, but their use can also result in considerable health and safety hazards for consumers. As the holiday season approaches, local authorities are ramping up their efforts to locate and arrest rogue traders, employing tools such as CCTV, the assistance of Darlington police, and collaboration with trading standards to confiscate illegal items that endanger consumer safety.

Moreover, a particular emphasis has been placed on ensuring that children’s toys are safe and compliant with established regulations. Counterfeit toys can pose risks, such as choking hazards, due to their failure to adhere to safety standards. Taylor stressed the importance of purchasing from credible retailers and advised consumers to avoid dubious online sellers, stating, “We advise people to buy from reputable retailers, whether that’s from a physical shop or an online supplier. It’s that guarantee of quality that you get when you buy from someone you know.”

In addition to this, council leaders have reiterated the necessity for vigilance against cold calling, doorstep sellers, and pervasive email scams that often accompany the holiday season. Jim Garner, cabinet member for stronger communities within the council, emphasized the predatory nature of fraudsters and counterfeit traders, who prioritize profit over the welfare of individuals and families. “Fraudsters and counterfeit traders do not care about your wellbeing or your finances – they only care about making money,” Garner remarked.

He further highlighted that engaging with counterfeit products not only jeopardizes personal health and safety but also inadvertently supports organized crime networks. To combat this, Garner urged residents to remain alert and take action against suspicious activities, which may include reporting incidents to local authorities. “By staying alert and reporting suspicious activity, you can help protect yourself and others in our community. I would ask people to share these messages and advice with family and friends, especially if they are particularly vulnerable,” he said.

As the community gears up for the festive season, the advice of local leaders and trading standards officers reiterates the importance of responsible consumer behaviour. Awareness and education around the dangers of counterfeit products and fraud are vital in protecting both oneself and the wider community from the detrimental effects associated with these illicit activities.
