TL;DR: Good posture, regular movement, suitable equipment, and quick DSE assessments prevent most discomfort and injuries.

DSE Basics

Under the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations, employers must assess and reduce risks for “users” of computers and similar devices—on-site and at home for hybrid workers.

Set Up Right

Chair & posture

Adjust height so hips ~level with knees; lumbar support; feet flat or on a footrest.

Screen & input devices

Top of screen at eye level; arm’s length away; external keyboard/mouse for laptops; reduce glare.

Breaks & movement

Microbreaks every 20–30 minutes; vary tasks; stand/walk during calls where possible.

Home-working controls

Provide guidance/equipment; simple self-assessments; escalation for issues.

Quick DSE Checklist

✅ Chair and screen adjusted
✅ Keyboard/mouse positioned comfortably
✅ Lighting & glare controlled
✅ Break reminders in place
✅ Issue reporting route known
