Supermarkets recall various products over safety concerns

Story Highlight

– Multiple food recalls due to health safety concerns.
– Aldi recalled Mozzarella Sticks over undeclared egg allergen.
– Disaronno bottles may contain glass, unsafe to drink.
– Calbee crisps recalled for undeclared mustard and celery.
– Asda and Poundland products recalled for possible glass contamination.

Full Story

Warnings have been issued for several food items being removed from shelves due to public safety concerns, including risks of contamination and mislabelled use-by dates. These recalls span a variety of products available throughout the UK, prompting immediate attention from consumers who may have purchased these items. It’s crucial for anyone who has bought affected products to be aware of potential health hazards and adhere to the associated guidance provided by retailers and the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Aldi, a well-known supermarket chain, has recently taken action to recall its popular festive item, Perfect Christmas Mozzarella Sticks in Blankets. This decision was prompted by the discovery that the product contains egg, an allergen that was not indicated on the packaging. As such, the item poses a risk for individuals with allergies or intolerances to egg. The affected product is sold in 278g packs and bears the barcode 4069365328743, with a use-by date of 15 December 2025.

In a statement regarding the recall, Aldi explained that the decision was made as a precaution and emphasized the potential health risk due to the incorrect labelling. Customers are encouraged to return the product to any Aldi store to receive a full refund. “We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation,” a representative from Aldi stated. The FSA also advised affected shoppers to refrain from consuming the product and to return it for a refund.

Another significant recall involves Disaronno Originale, a popular liqueur, which has been flagged for containing potential glass fragments in its 700ml bottles. This recall, issued by Illva Saronno S.p.A, covers specific batch codes: 25374, 25375, 25381, 25382, 25435, 25442, and 25444. An FSA spokesperson confirmed the urgent nature of the recall, urging customers to stop consuming the product and return it to the retailer for either a replacement or a refund. “These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought it,” they stated.

In a similar vein, retailers Tesco and B&M have announced a recall for Calbee Hot & Spicy Chips and Calbee Pizza Chips due to undeclared allergens. The Hot & Spicy Chips contain mustard not listed on the packaging, while the Pizza Chips include celery, also not declared. Both products are being recalled from stores, and customers are advised to return any purchased items for a full refund. The affected packages of the Calbee Hot & Spicy Chips and Pizza Chips have various best before date codes, which include those up until June 5, 2026, and April 28, 2026, respectively.

Asda has proactively recalled its 10 Mini Duck Spring Rolls with Hoisin Dip after mislabelling the use-by date. The product was indicated to be safe until 29 December 2025, but the correct date should be 29 November 2025. As such, these spring rolls are now deemed unsafe for consumption. The FSA has reiterated the importance of returning these products to Asda for a full refund, highlighting the lack of need for a receipt when making the return.

Poundland and Dealz have also issued a warning regarding The Tasty Snack Co. Roasted and Salted Cashews, as the product may contain glass, representing a serious safety risk. Customers who have purchased these cashews are asked to return them without the requirement of a receipt for a full refund. The recall affects cashews with a batch code of 56T 25255 and a best before date of 19 July 2026.

Lidl has joined the growing list of retailers recalling products over safety concerns, specifically relating to its Simply Roasted and Salted Cashews. Similar to Poundland’s product, there is a risk of contamination with glass. The FSA has urged consumers to refrain from consuming this product and to return it to Lidl for a full refund.

Marks & Spencer is also recalling its Milk Chocolate Honeycomb after discovering that it may contain undeclared peanuts. This presents a substantial health risk for individuals with nut allergies. The affected product is packaged in 120g units with a lot number of 5242 and is marked with a best before date of 12 May 2026. M&S has communicated with its customers regarding the recall and has put point-of-sale notices in stores to help inform shoppers further.

Moreover, Iceland has issued a recall for its Vegetable Lasagne due to the potential presence of plastic, making the product unsafe for consumption. The effective best before dates for this item are July 23, 2026, and July 30, 2026. Customers who have purchased the lasagne are advised to return it for a full refund.

These recalls illustrate an ongoing commitment among food retailers to ensure the safety of their products. The FSA continues to play a crucial role in disseminating information regarding product recalls, supporting public awareness, and providing guidance on how to handle potential food safety threats. In cases of product withdrawals or recalls, it is essential for consumers to be vigilant, check their cupboards, and adhere to any instructions provided by the relevant retailers or governmental bodies to ensure their safety.

Our Thoughts

The series of product recalls illustrated in the article highlights several critical lapses in food safety protocols that could have been avoided. Key preventive measures include stricter quality control and auditing processes at manufacturing and packaging facilities to ensure compliance with food safety standards. This includes thorough checks for allergenic ingredients, accurate labeling, and contamination risks, particularly with foreign bodies like glass or plastic.

Several relevant UK regulations were potentially breached, including the Food Safety Act 1990, which mandates that food products must be safe for consumption, and the Food Labelling Regulations 1996, which require accurate labeling of ingredients, especially allergens. Non-compliance with these regulations exposes customers to serious health risks.

To prevent similar incidents in the future, food producers should enhance their traceability systems and implement comprehensive training for staff involved in food handling and labeling. Additionally, a proactive approach to consumer communication and clearly displayed point-of-sale notices, as demonstrated by the retailers, should remain a priority. Regular evaluations of safety protocols are essential for maintaining high food safety standards.
