Full Story

Organisers of a prominent Christian festival have expressed deep sorrow following a tragic incident in which a man lost his life and six others sustained injuries due to a collapsing sign. The event, known as the Big Church Festival, took place at Wiston Park, near Steyning in West Sussex, and was interrupted by the accident on Friday afternoon.

At approximately 15:38 BST, Sussex Police received emergency calls regarding the incident. Authorities later confirmed that a 41-year-old man from Eastbourne had died. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, expressed her condolences, stating, “I pray for his family, friends and loved ones as they grieve. I pray for those receiving treatment, and the healthcare workers looking after them… May the God of comfort and healing be with them all.”

The South East Coast Ambulance Service informed that four of the six injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent care, with two of these individuals suffering serious injuries. The festival, which has been heralded as the largest Christian event in the UK since its inception in 2009, commenced on Friday and was scheduled to continue through Sunday. However, following the incident, the organisers decided to cancel the remaining activities.

In a statement, the festival’s organising team asserted their commitment to cooperating with law enforcement and the Health and Safety Executive as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident take place. “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who responded, and to our teams and community for the care they have shown one another,” they added.

Witnesses to the event shared their experiences on social media, with author Andrew Ollerton recalling the moment of the incident. “My wife Charlotte and I were walking just a few paces behind when a huge overhead sign came crashing down on the people in front of us,” he wrote. He and others quickly attempted to lift the sign off victims and administered first aid until paramedics arrived.

Another attendee, Judah Martin, reported observing vehicles approaching the scene at high speed before attendees were instructed to return to their tents. “As we had no internet connection, we were unable to access information, except that word spread that there were serious injuries due to a falling sign,” the 20-year-old remarked.

Rayanne Walters, who celebrated her birthday at the festival, recounted the emotional atmosphere, saying, “You could hear people crying in the middle of the night… People were crying because we were just so upset.” Jessica Schuffenhauer, a festival-goer who travelled from Leipzig, Germany, highlighted the sense of unity amongst attendees in the aftermath of the incident, as many gathered to sing and pray together.

Carla Diamond, visiting from Hertfordshire, expressed feelings of uncertainty about the wellbeing of friends present at the festival, while Peter Heard from Wiltshire described the bewilderment felt by him and his companions after the accident, stating they felt “a little dazed.”

The Reverend James Di Castiglione, rector of the parish where the festival is held, conveyed the shock experienced by the local community. “We are all experiencing emotional whiplash about what’s happened really because Big Church Festival is such a time of joy and unity and love and celebration,” he explained. He noted that there was a pervasive sense of confusion and shock that enveloped the festival site, describing the news as “the worst lightning bolt of tragic news striking everybody’s hearts.”

In response to the cancellation of the festival, the Salvation Army in Hove opened its hall to provide shelter for those unable to return home. According to Martin Bellshaw from the Hove branch, approximately 20 individuals from various locations, including Bristol and the North-West, took refuge there for the night.

The charity ParentFuel, which offers support to Christian parents, stated that everyone associated with their group at the festival was safe. “We cannot praise the BCF (Big Church Festival) team enough for the way things have been handled,” they mentioned in a social media post. They reflected on the fragility of life, stating, “Life is so precious and so, so short. This weekend brought that ever closer for us all.”

Sussex Police have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to reach out. They confirmed that the Health and Safety Executive and local authority have also been informed as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Big Church Festival, celebrated for bringing together thousands of attendees under a spirit of faith and community, will be remembered for this unfortunate event. The church leaders and local officials are now tasked with supporting the grieving community and addressing the need for safety in future gatherings, ensuring that such a tragedy does not recur.

As communities come together in the wake of this sorrowful incident, the resilience and compassion of those involved shine through amidst the tragedy, highlighting the importance of support and care in times of crisis.

Our Thoughts

The tragic incident at the Big Church Festival highlights several key safety lessons that could have potentially prevented the injuries and death. First, the event organizers should have conducted a thorough risk assessment in line with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, focusing on the structural integrity of temporary installations, such as signs. Regular inspections and maintenance of such structures are critical to ensure safety.

Moreover, there should have been a robust emergency response plan as part of the event’s health and safety management, complying with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. This would entail effective communication protocols and contingency plans for managing incidents and ensuring the safety of attendees.

It is important to note that the prevailing conditions surrounding outdoor events, including weather and site-specific risks, also necessitate appropriate hazard identification measures. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) should provide oversight and guidance on best practices for temporary event hazards. Implementing these recommendations can help prevent similar occurrences at large gatherings in the future.
