Campaign highlights life-changing injuries in farming during Farm Safety Week

Story Highlight

– Farm Safety Week highlights serious, life-changing farm injuries.
– Farming has the poorest safety record in the UK.
– 22 farm fatalities reported in England, Scotland, Wales.
– Heatwave increases risks of serious incidents on farms.
– Campaign emphasizes prevention of injuries, not just fatalities.

Full Story

As the 14th annual Farm Safety Week unfolds, the Farm Safety Foundation, popularly known as Yellow Wellies, is placing a spotlight on a critical yet frequently neglected aspect of agricultural safety: the long-term ramifications of serious injuries in farming environments. Although fatalities in this sector naturally garner considerable attention, the foundation emphasizes the countless lives irrevocably altered by non-fatal incidents every year. This year’s initiative is underpinned by a focus on the enduring effects of these injuries, which directly impact farmers, workers, and their families long after the media coverage has diminished.

Recent data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) underscores the agricultural sector’s ongoing struggle with safety standards, identifying it as the industry with the most significant rates of both fatalities and serious injuries. In the 2025/26 period alone, England, Scotland, and Wales witnessed 22 fatalities among farm workers. Additionally, statistics reveal that those employed in agriculture, forestry, and fishing face a risk of work-related death that is approximately seven times higher than their counterparts in construction, and 21 times greater than the average across all industries. Despite attention to fatalities in recent years, thousands more agricultural workers are enduring serious injuries and health issues that can severely hinder their work capabilities and quality of life.

Compounding concerns this year, particularly during the UK’s third reported heatwave, the Foundation warns that soaring temperatures can exacerbate the risk of both severe and fatal incidents within the farming industry—a sector that already holds the dubious distinction of the highest rate of workplace injuries in the UK. Stephanie Berkeley, manager of Yellow Wellies, articulated this concern, stating, “When we talk about farm safety, fatalities understandably dominate the conversation, but serious injuries can be just as life-changing. The reality is that there is no such thing as a papercut on a farm, and the margin between a near miss, a serious injury, and a fatal incident is often frighteningly small.”

Encounters with machinery, falls from heights, and vehicle incidents can result in chronic pain, diminished mobility, or even permanent disability for those involved. These types of injuries have repercussions that extend beyond the individual, affecting their families, business operations, and local communities. Current estimates suggest that around 9,000 workers within the agricultural sector report health issues that are directly work-related.

A new survey commissioned by Yellow Wellies and conducted during May and June 2026 illuminated the prevailing fears among farmers and agricultural workers. The survey sampled responses from 408 individuals involved in the industry, revealing that for many, the prospect of surviving a farm accident with a life-altering injury is a more pressing concern than the risk of fatality. Notably, 49.7% of respondents under 40 expressed greater worry about sustaining disabling injuries than about dying in an accident, with similar concerns evident among older farmers—51.7% indicated a preference for avoiding disability over death.

As temperatures soar, the additional stress posed by heatwaves reveals even more challenges for the agricultural workforce. Those working in agriculture can experience five to ten times more annual sun exposure than those in indoor environments. Moreover, this sector ranks among the highest for fatalities associated with sun exposure—accounting for approximately 23% of such deaths, translating to roughly one fatality per month among farm workers due to skin cancer linked to sunlight.

Extremities of heat introduce a myriad of risks extending beyond mere sunburn. Issues such as dehydration, heat stress, exhaustion, and decreased focus can significantly elevate the risks associated with operating machinery, handling livestock, and working at heights—areas that already contribute heavily to the agricultural sector’s injury statistics.

In response, Yellow Wellies has issued a series of life-saving recommendations aimed at those who are working outdoors during this critical period. Key advice includes donning protective clothing, wearing broad-brimmed hats to shield against sun exposure, seeking shade during breaks, applying high-factor sunscreen of at least SPF30 to exposed areas, hydrating frequently, taking regular breaks, and monitoring for signs of fatigue or mental stress. Furthermore, they encourage frequent skin checks and maintaining machinery in good working order to mitigate the risk of accidents and fire.

Stephanie Berkeley further reiterated the campaign’s objective: “If we are really serious about making our farms safer, we must broaden the conversation. We must take injuries just as seriously as fatalities and recognize that preventing harm, not just death, has to be our goal. And we must bring the people behind the statistics into the open, not to alarm, but to connect. Because connection is what changes behavior.”

This year’s Farm Safety Week aims to dispel the long-entrenched myth that only fatal injuries carry weight. Throughout the week, the Farm Safety Foundation will engage with farmers, families, industry representatives, and the broader rural community to foster reflection, dialogue, and proactive measures towards agricultural safety. The campaign stresses that injuries on farms, while not always fatal, can indeed be life-altering in profound ways.

Our Thoughts

To mitigate the significant safety issues in the agricultural sector highlighted in the article, several actions and improvements could be implemented. First, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of their employees, which includes proper training and equipment for tasks involving machinery, working at height, and exposure to heat. Enhanced training and education on risk recognition and management could significantly reduce the rate of serious injuries.

Compliance with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 should be strengthened, emphasizing risk assessments specific to the challenges posed by heatwaves and high UV exposure. Regular health checks and monitoring of workers, especially regarding heat stress and sun exposure, could further protect individuals’ health.

Promoting a culture of safety where both fatal and non-fatal incidents are taken seriously may encourage better reporting and preventive measures. Furthermore, establishing clear emergency protocols and ensuring accessibility to fire safety equipment can address the risks associated with machinery and environmental hazards. Overall, fostering continuous safety awareness and open communication about risks can be instrumental in preventing similar incidents in the future.
