Full Story

Last month, Arizona State University hockey player Matthew Mayich collapsed during a team workout and is currently battling for his life due to exertional heatstroke, according to his family’s attorney, who reported that a meaningful recovery seems unlikely. Mayich, who was selected by the St Louis Blues in the NHL draft, will unfortunately not have the chance to play professionally. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of heat-related illnesses affecting young athletes in American sports.

Martin McNair, father of the late Jordan McNair, shared his own tragic experience with heat-related injury after his son collapsed during football practice at the University of Maryland in 2018. Jordan, who never recovered from the incident, raised critical questions about athlete safety and emergency preparedness that McNair emphasizes must be addressed.

Reflecting on his son’s case, McNair regrets not asking essential questions regarding safety protocols when they were discussing Jordan’s future with coaches, such as the existence and implementation of an emergency action plan and the necessary equipment available to prevent heat-related injuries. He admits to having an inadequate understanding of the critical aspects of heat illness prior to his son’s collapse.

Since then, McNair has dedicated himself to raising awareness and improving safety measures for student-athletes. He has collaborated with medical professionals to ensure prompt intervention for exertional heat illness at sporting events across the country. McNair stated that during a heat-related emergency, there is a narrow window of about 20 to 30 minutes to cool the athlete to avoid irreversible damage. He noted that adequate cooling measures must be initiated quickly, as excessive core body temperature can lead to severe organ failure.

In a significant parallel, McNair pointed out similarities between the incidents involving his son and Mayich, citing insufficient recognition of distress and the failure to implement emergency protocols effectively. He emphasizes that these emergencies can occur anytime athletes are on the field and that systems must be established beforehand to protect them.

McNair argues that both schools and athletic programmes must actively ensure that comprehensive emergency action plans are in place and practiced regularly. He expressed that parents should not have to undergo the harrowing experience of losing a child to make such inquiries about safety. He believes that the loss of life in sports is unacceptable and calls for urgent action from all levels of youth sports organizations to develop and maintain safety protocols.

McNair concluded by wishing for a positive outcome for Mayich and his family, recognising the urgent need for systemic changes to safeguard young athletes against preventable tragedies.

What this means for your site

The tragic incidents involving athletes suffering severe heat-related illnesses highlight serious shortcomings in emergency preparedness and response. In the context of UK health and safety, the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 are critical, mandating that employers assess risks and implement adequate emergency plans. Proper training and frequent drills should be established to ensure all staff members can effectively respond to emergencies, such as exertional heatstroke.

To prevent similar occurrences, sports organizations and facilities must develop robust emergency action plans, including protocols for recognizing early signs of heat-related illness. Regular training sessions should involve all staff, particularly coaches and first responders, ensuring they understand their roles in an emergency. Additionally, ensuring readily accessible cooling equipment, such as ice baths or cold packs, is essential for rapid intervention when needed. Such steps can significantly reduce response times and ultimately save lives.
