A care home in Inverclyde is facing the potential loss of its registration due to serious safety concerns. An unannounced inspection by the Care Inspectorate in April revealed that Larkfield View Care Centre in Greenock, which had 89 elderly residents at the time, was jeopardising the safety of its residents. A letter of concern was issued to the facility on April 15 following the inspection.
After ongoing monitoring, the Care Inspectorate has filed an application in the sheriff court for the cancellation of the care home’s registration. A spokesperson for the Care Inspectorate stated that this action could facilitate new care arrangements for the residents. “We understand this is a difficult and distressing time for residents, their loved ones and staff at the home,” the spokesperson remarked. “However, our first priority is always the health, safety and wellbeing of residents.”
The inspection report indicated that, despite having “committed staff and pockets of good practice,” Larkfield View exhibited “systemic weaknesses in leadership, governance, staffing analysis and risk management” that overshadowed these positives. The report warned that without sustained improvements focused on outcomes, residents would remain at risk of avoidable harm.
Significant issues were identified concerning nutrition and hydration, fall management, and medication administration. Unsafe practices in nutrition and hydration were noted, posing risks of choking and aspiration. The report also highlighted that the living environment failed to provide a safe and dignified setting, citing widespread cleanliness issues and poor maintenance of bathrooms, kitchens, and communal areas. Dangerous conditions were present, including improperly stored food and worn or rusted equipment, compromising staff’s ability to maintain cleanliness effectively.
Moreover, the report raised concerns about unclear medication practices, inappropriate administration methods, and a lack of effective review following frequent and often unwitnessed falls. It was noted that patterns in falls data were not consistently analysed to mitigate risks. Additionally, restrictive practices, such as the use of lap belts and bed rails, were found to be introduced without adequate assessment or consent, further endangering residents.
The Care Inspectorate stated that anyone with concerns about a care service can contact them at 0345 600 9527. Both Holmes Care Group Scotland Ltd, the operator of Larkfield View Care Centre, and Inverclyde Council have been approached for comments regarding the situation.

What this means for your site
This alarming situation at Larkfield View Care Centre highlights significant failures in health and safety management that can be addressed through improved practices and adherence to legislation. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Care Standards Act 2000 must be consistently applied to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents. These pieces of legislation stress the importance of risk management, staff training, and maintaining a safe environment.
To prevent similar incidents, a comprehensive review of risk management processes should be undertaken, focusing on nutrition, hydration, and medication examination protocols. Implementing robust training programs for staff on safe care practices and regular audits of cleanliness and safety standards can also greatly enhance care quality. Furthermore, establishing a systematic review of incident data, such as fall frequency and severity, is crucial for identifying patterns and implementing timely interventions to prevent future occurrences. Taking these proactive steps can ensure compliance with the relevant health and safety legislation and enhance the overall care environment for residents.
