CeraVe has released new research indicating a disconnect between awareness and proactive skincare among adults in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The study, conducted among 6,000 individuals, highlights that while 90% express concern over environmental factors impacting their skin, only 22% utilise products meant to enhance the skin barrier. Additionally, 81% of participants acknowledge the significance of protecting skin beyond ultraviolet exposure.
The findings reveal broader skincare concerns; 47% of respondents feel their skin is more sensitive than it was five years ago, and 50% attribute dryness to environmental changes. However, only 10% take extra skincare measures during high pollution levels, and 55% prefer simple skincare routines.
The research was presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Congress in Vienna. Dr Andrew Park, a Board-Certified Dermatologist, noted the lack of awareness linking dryness, tightness, or sensitivity to skin barrier issues and stressed the importance of clear guidance. He stated, “While awareness matters, clear and trusted guidance is the most important factor.” Dr Park recommended CeraVe products, which are formulated with three skin-identical ceramides to help restore and maintain the skin barrier.
CeraVe emphasizes safety and efficacy in product development, ensuring that all formulations are rigorously assessed for safety and suitability with input from scientific and medical experts. Gene Colon, CeraVe’s Global Senior Vice President of Medical Relations and Communications, commented on the research, stating, “Our responsibility is to make skin health understandable and accessible, while never compromising on safety and efficacy.” As the dialogue surrounding skincare evolves, CeraVe aims to simplify the message with credible science and effective products.

What this means for your site
The research indicates a significant gap between awareness and proactive measures in skin protection, emphasizing the need for clear guidance on skin health. To enhance safety practices, businesses should implement training programs emphasizing the importance of skin care, particularly for employees exposed to environmental hazards. This is especially relevant under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, which mandates ensuring employees’ health and safety, along with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 that require risk assessments for potential hazards affecting health.
Concrete steps include providing employees with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as barrier creams or skincare products designed to maintain skin integrity, particularly for those working in environments that exacerbate skin issues, like dryness or irritation. Additionally, establishing a routine for regular skin assessments can lead to earlier identification of problems and reinforce the message about the importance of skin health. These actions not only promote employee well-being but also align with legal responsibilities for workplace health and safety management.
