Glasgow employers urged to strengthen workplace safety measures

Story Highlight

– Glasgow employers must review workplace safety management processes.
– Workplace injuries cost UK economy £21.6 billion in 2022/23.
– Recurring safety failures identified across multiple industries.
– Hybrid working increases importance of suitable safety measures.
– Regular inspections and checklists enhance hazard identification and compliance.

Full Story

Employers in Glasgow are being urged to reevaluate their approaches to workplace safety following alarming statistics that highlight the ongoing challenges in this area across the UK. Recent data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) indicates that injuries incurred at work, along with health issues related to occupational hazards, have cost the UK economy an estimated £21.6 billion during the fiscal year 2022/23. The report reveals a staggering loss of around 33.7 million working days due to conditions linked to work-related health concerns.

The findings underscore a pressing need for a thorough review of safety practices among employers. Inspectors have identified persistent deficiencies in various sectors, particularly in manual handling, the safety of machinery, inadequate fire precautions, poor workspace cleanliness, unsafe equipment, and a lack of thorough risk assessments. Such failings frequently lead to enforcement notices, improvement notices, and in some critical instances, legal action.

Despite the well-known risks in construction, engineering, and manufacturing—sectors that traditionally carry high risks—accidents are not confined to these environments. Office-based work environments also face significant risks associated with the use of display screen equipment, slips, trips, falls, workplace stress, fire safety, and ergonomics concerning workstations. With the rise of hybrid working and the increasing reliance on digital solutions, it is crucial for employers to remain vigilant. They must ensure that staff are equipped with appropriate resources, receive adequate training, and have robust safety measures in place, regardless of their work location.

A key tool for employers is the workplace inspection checklist, which offers a systematic approach to identifying potential hazards before they lead to accidents or injuries. Instead of informal checks that might overlook critical details, a well-documented checklist allows businesses to assess risks diligently, keeping a clear record of inspections, corrective measures taken, and ongoing adherence to safety protocols.

Typical elements included in a workplace inspection checklist are:

– Risk assessments
– Manual handling procedures
– Fire safety protocols
– Evaluations of display screen equipment
– Conditions of machinery and other equipment
– Compliance with electrical safety regulations
– Housekeeping standards
– Availability and condition of personal protective equipment
– Emergency procedures
– Welfare facilities for employees

Regular inspections allow employers to spot recurring safety issues, investigate near misses, and ensure that risk control measures are effective as circumstances change—be it due to equipment updates, staffing alterations, or procedural modifications.

The frequency of these inspections should correlate with the level of risk present in the workspace. For instance, lower-risk environments such as traditional office settings may only require assessments every six to twelve months. In contrast, sectors like construction, manufacturing, or engineering may necessitate much more frequent evaluations, depending on the nature of the work performed.

Adopting a structured approach mitigates the chance of critical hazards being overlooked. It provides managers with a consistent methodology to document findings, designate responsibilities, and verify that corrective actions have been executed.

John McGuire, Managing Director at Velappity, emphasized the significance of ongoing safety evaluations, stating: “The findings are a reminder that workplace safety should be an ongoing process rather than an annual exercise. As workplaces, equipment, and processes change, new risks can emerge if inspections aren’t carried out consistently.”

He further added, “Many of the issues highlighted by HSE, including manual handling, fire safety, and inadequate risk assessments, can often be identified early through regular workplace inspections. Using a structured workplace inspection checklist helps employers follow a consistent process, identify hazards, assign corrective actions and maintain a clear audit trail showing issues have been resolved.”

While recognising that each workplace entails unique characteristics and challenges, the advantages of regular inspections are universally applicable. They serve as one of the most effective methods for identifying potential hazards, safeguarding staff, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. Businesses that routinely review their inspection checklists are generally in a superior position to reduce risks, avert accidents, and cultivate a safer environment for employees.

Additionally, it is crucial for employers to revisit their inspection protocols whenever there are alterations in equipment, modifications to workplace layouts, or updates in working practices. Maintaining current risk assessments, providing appropriate training, and responding promptly to issues identified during inspections can significantly enhance safety standards, thus minimising the chance of regulatory action, potential injuries, and health complications related to the workplace.

In conclusion, as workplace dynamics persistently evolve, Glasgow employers must commit to proactive safety management strategies that foster a culture of vigilance and responsibility. Regular inspections, thorough risk assessments, and adherence to safety protocols are not only regulatory requirements but essential components of a healthy and productive workplace. Prioritising safety will ultimately lead to better employee wellbeing, fewer disruptions in productivity, and a robust organisational reputation in the community.

Our Thoughts

The article highlights significant workplace safety challenges in Glasgow and across the UK. To avoid these issues, employers should implement more structured and frequent workplace inspections to identify hazards proactively. Key safety lessons include the need for comprehensive risk assessments, particularly regarding manual handling, fire safety, and equipment safety, which are commonly overlooked.

Relevant regulations breached may include the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which mandates a duty of care for employers to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of employees. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to carry out risk assessments and implement necessary control measures, which appear to be insufficiently practiced as indicated by recurring failures.

To prevent similar incidents, businesses should adopt thorough inspection checklists and ensure inspections are consistent and documented. Regular reviews of workplace conditions, risk assessments, and training, especially with changes in equipment or processes, are vital. By promoting an ongoing commitment to safety through frequent inspections and effective training, employers can improve safety standards and reduce the risk of accidents and incidents.
