The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported a national outbreak of salmonella food poisoning, following the unfortunate death of one individual and the illness of hundreds more. While the precise cause has yet to be confirmed, officials are investigating the possibility that imported eggs or dishes containing them are contributing factors.
Current information indicates that many of those infected may have contracted the bacteria while dining out, implicating restaurants, cafes, and takeaways in the spread of this outbreak. Nevertheless, the investigation is ongoing, and numerous questions remain unanswered.
Salmonella consists of a group of bacteria frequently found in the intestines of various animals, including chickens, pigs, and cattle. This bacteria is often associated with foodborne illnesses, particularly from consumption of contaminated eggs and poultry. The transmission of salmonella typically occurs through:
