Full Story

In a collaborative effort that has spanned over a decade, Knew Productions has partnered with Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK to create a series of around 20 corporate videos, enhancing training and stakeholder engagement across various aspects of the construction and engineering sectors. The collaboration, initiated in 2016, has evolved to address a number of critical themes including onboarding, health and safety, and environmental practices.

Based in Wrexham, Knew Productions was tasked with producing a video specifically focused on the methods of operation within a live construction site, particularly around heavy machinery. This was part of a broader aim to ensure that both employees and contractors understand best practices in a potentially hazardous environment. The video, known as the people and plant interface zone (PPIZ) video, has served as a crucial training tool since its inception.

Jones Bros, with a strong portfolio that includes significant projects such as the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm—the largest of its kind globally—and the long-awaited Havant Thicket reservoir, has expanded its operations to include numerous onshore wind farms and battery storage initiatives. In this context, Knew Productions has provided tailored site induction films that inform staff about various risks, operational policies, and procedures crucial for maintaining safety standards.

The collaboration has also reinforced Jones Bros’ commitment to environmental sustainability. For instance, Knew Productions developed a training video designed to instruct team members on effective fuel consumption practices while operating construction machinery. This initiative aligns with the industry’s increasing focus on reducing carbon footprints and adhering to net-zero targets.

Richard Knew, the founder and managing director of Knew Productions, expressed pride in the partnership with Jones Bros. He reflected on the growth of their working relationship, emphasising the mutual trust established over the years. Knew noted, “Having filmed at construction projects over the years, our videographers understand how to behave on site and what it takes to safely capture high-spec machines and kit, which I think helped build trust between ourselves and Jones Bros from the start.”

Knew Productions’ contribution goes beyond merely producing training materials; it encompasses a broader strategy to highlight environmental responsibilities and staff wellbeing. The shift in content focus, from health and safety to ecological care, speaks to an evolving mindset within the industry that prioritises comprehensive training programs for employees. “Overall, we’re very proud to work alongside another major North Wales company, helping produce powerful and informative footage that ultimately aligns with the firm’s goals,” Knew added.

Supporting this sentiment, Mike Jolley, senior health, safety, and environmental manager at Jones Bros, commended Knew Productions for their meticulous approach. He stated, “Knew Productions’ attention to detail is second to none, and they understand our requirements, standards, and culture which is evident in the videos they have produced for us.” The consistent positive feedback from employees regarding the clarity and quality of the videos highlights the effectiveness of their partnership.

The collaboration, characterised by a commitment to quality and a deep understanding of each other’s operational ethos, stands as a testament to the strength of local business relationships in North Wales. As Jolley put it, “Overall, it’s fantastic to have such a mutually beneficial partnership with a fellow North Wales business and I look forward to continuing our long-standing relationship for years to come.”

In addition to their work with Jones Bros, Knew Productions has collaborated with various other construction and civil engineering firms, further solidifying their reputation in the industry. Their ability to create engaging and informative content has made them a valuable resource for companies seeking to enhance their training and communications.

As both Knew Productions and Jones Bros look ahead, they remain committed to producing content that not only meets industry standards but also fosters a culture of safety, efficiency, and environmental consciousness. This ongoing partnership exemplifies how collaborative efforts can lead to innovative solutions that support the development of safer and more sustainable construction practices.

Our Thoughts

The article highlights the ongoing partnership between Knew Productions and Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK in producing health and safety training videos. While the emphasis on health and safety training is commendable, there are several areas for improvement to further minimize risks on site.

Firstly, greater emphasis on practical, hands-on training alongside video content could enhance safety effectiveness. Engaging workers in real-life simulations related to heavy machinery operation would better prepare them for actual site conditions, as per the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which mandates adequate training and supervision.

Additionally, regular audits and assessments of the effectiveness of the training materials produced are vital. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require that employers regularly review risks and ensure that safety protocols are relevant and adhered to.

Lastly, improving communication channels for reporting safety concerns could prevent incidents. Implementing a robust feedback mechanism would encourage a culture of safety and responsiveness.

In summary, a combination of enhanced practical training, systematic review of training materials, and improved communication could significantly bolster safety measures and compliance with UK health and safety regulations.
