Full Story

HCA Healthcare UK Enhances Patient Care with MEDITECH Expanse Implementation

In a significant advancement for healthcare delivery, HCA Healthcare UK has successfully implemented the MEDITECH Expanse electronic health record (EHR) system across its network of 11 acute hospitals and numerous outpatient facilities. This integration aims to enhance patient safety while also streamlining workflows, thereby improving overall operational efficiency.

The MEDITECH Expanse platform is a cutting-edge, cloud-based EHR that offers healthcare professionals across HCA’s facilities an integrated, multidisciplinary health record. This unified approach allows clinicians to have a comprehensive view of a patient’s health and treatment history, facilitating care continuity regardless of the location or time.

John Reay, the Chief Executive Officer of HCA Healthcare UK, stated, “Our primary objective for the Expanse implementation was to establish a single, evidence-based standard of best-practice care across our hospitals and facilities. This new foundation will provide us with the agility to adapt rapidly as medicine evolves, ensuring a high-quality experience for both our patients and our staff, across all locations.”

With this standardisation on a single MEDITECH Expanse EHR platform, collaboration between clinical staff and IT teams has become more effective. The reduced need for multiple disparate applications translates into cost savings and a more consistent user experience.

Since the launch, the Expanse system has notably enhanced patient safety through its robust electronic medication management features and by providing each clinician with an aggregated and detailed view of patient histories. This capability is crucial for informed decision-making at the point of care.

The implementation of Expanse has also transformed everyday workflows within HCA. Clinicians now utilise mobile devices to review patient care, document their activities, and confirm patient identities directly at the care site. Such advancements allow healthcare professionals to maximise their face-to-face interaction time with patients, ultimately benefiting the patient experience.

Cliff Bucknall, the Chief Medical Officer at HCA UK, remarked, “Clinicians additionally benefit from enhanced accessibility through cloud-based hosting, enabling secure access to patient information from anywhere in the UK and supporting more timely remote care.” This flexibility has proven essential, particularly during times when remote access to patient information becomes vital.

Hosted on the Google Cloud Platform in collaboration with MEDITECH UK, the Expanse system also brings vital scalability and heightened security to healthcare operations. Furthermore, this infrastructure enables the integration of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, fostering a modernised environment across healthcare settings. It simplifies the onboarding process for other facilities that are keen to adopt a unified hosting solution.

The successful implementation of the MEDITECH Expanse system is credited to the effective teamwork displayed by all parties involved. This includes HCA’s internal teams, MEDITECH’s support personnel, and CereCore, which contributed with a team of analysts, project managers, and leadership resources crucial to realising this transition.

Helen Waters, Executive Vice President and COO of MEDITECH, expressed pride in the long-standing partnership with HCA Healthcare UK, saying, “MEDITECH is proud to continue our 30-year partnership with HCA Healthcare UK and looks forward to sharing the next chapter of their care transformation journey with Expanse.” She underscored HCA’s commitment to harnessing advanced technology for high-quality, patient-centred care, highlighting the myriad ways Expanse will enable the organisation to embrace innovations in treatment and diagnostics.

With the new digital foundation firmly established, HCA Healthcare UK is set to further utilise MEDITECH solutions along with integrated third-party applications. The goal is to automate various processes, increase efficiency, and expedite care delivery. HCA remains resolute in its dedication to development opportunities, thereby leveraging their collaboration to inform MEDITECH’s strategy in addressing the pressing healthcare needs within the UK.

HCA Healthcare UK operates several renowned facilities, including London Bridge Hospital, The Princess Grace Hospital, and The Wellington Hospital. Their comprehensive network extends to outpatient centres and collaborations with NHS partnerships, ensuring diverse healthcare offerings ranging from urgent care to routine day-case treatments.

MEDITECH, established over 34 years ago, has been a pioneering force in the deployment of EHR systems across various healthcare institutions, including numerous NHS Trusts. Expanse, their intelligent EPR platform, is designed to empower healthcare organisations to envision and realise the next era of digital healthcare, complete with AI-enhanced solutions and sophisticated analytics.

CereCore International, another partner in this initiative, is known for its IT services aimed at supporting hospital operations and transforming healthcare measures through advanced technology. Their role as a partner is pivotal, as they provide vital support to facilitate the integration of technology into clinical practice.

As HCA Healthcare UK integrates modern technological solutions, it continues to position itself as a leader in the UK healthcare landscape, paving the way for future advancements in patient care and operational excellence.

Our Thoughts

The article highlights the successful implementation of the MEDITECH Expanse system by HCA Healthcare UK to streamline healthcare delivery and enhance patient safety. However, potential areas for improvement and key lessons can be identified.

To avoid any risks associated with the transition, robust training for staff on the new system should have been prioritized, ensuring familiarity with electronic medication management to reduce the likelihood of errors. Regular risk assessments should have been conducted in accordance with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 to evaluate any challenges posed by integrating new technologies.

Additionally, ongoing oversight and feedback mechanisms could help identify potential issues promptly, complying with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which mandates employers to ensure the health and safety of employees. Adequate disaster recovery and data protection measures must be implemented to address cybersecurity concerns, adhering to GDPR regulations relating to patient data security.

To prevent similar incidents, healthcare providers should establish a continuous professional development program that keeps clinicians up to date with evolving technologies, fostering a culture of safety and efficiency in patient care.
