Swimmers brave icy waters for New Year's Day dips amid weather warnings

Story Highlight

– Hundreds participated in New Year’s Day swims nationwide.
– Cold water warnings issued for eastern coast swimmers.
– Tragically, two men went missing during a dip.
– Severe weather alerts for snow and ice issued.
– UK health alerts upgraded to ‘amber’ for vulnerable groups.

Full Story

Hundreds of enthusiastic participants took part in traditional New Year’s Day swims across the UK, despite the chilly conditions that swept through the nation. In Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, over 200 swimmers donned festive attire, including Christmas jumpers and hats, while others opted for minimal swimwear, all eager to usher in 2026 amid cheers from a crowd on the promenade.

Another notable event took place in Castle Douglas, Scotland, where around 100 individuals plunged into the icy waters of Loch Ken as part of the annual Crossmichael Dip. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the dip, an event that has successfully raised significant funds for charitable causes. Jim McLellan, who has been with the event since its inception—missing only one dip—joined fellow participants in the frigid waters, sharing, “It’s a great local event and the crowds also turned out to watch.” With temperatures hovering just below 4 degrees Celsius, the water was particularly frigid.

As these swimmers took the plunge, the Met Office issued urgent warnings regarding the potential dangers posed by large waves along the eastern seaboard of the UK. The RNLI cautioned that the conditions could become life-threatening by the afternoon. This news follows a tragic incident on Christmas Day in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, where two swimmers, including 63-year-old antiques dealer Matthew Upham, went missing during a swim. The search for these individuals has heightened awareness about the risks associated with seasonal dips.

James Waters, a volunteer with Tynemouth RNLI, stated: “It will be getting dangerous out there from about midday. It’s fine for the moment, but it will build for the next couple of days, with 10ft to 11ft swells and that would constitute a risk to life. There are going to be pretty high waves dumping onto the beach from around midday today until at least Sunday. We would warn people not to go into the sea due to the risks.”

In an effort to alert the public about safety hazards, the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade released a water safety alert, which remains in effect until January 3. The brigade emphasized the need for swimmers and beachgoers to adhere to safety protocols, especially with the anticipated strong rip currents along many beaches in the region. A statement from the brigade reminded individuals, “If you do get caught in a rip, try to swim parallel to shore to escape, and if you can’t do that, ‘float to live’ and shout for help.” The past year’s history of water-related incidents underscores the importance of these measures, especially after a distressing drowning at Longsands Beach, where a swimmer was swept out to sea.

As festive dips took place, health officials and meteorologists were increasingly concerned about the severe wintry conditions gripping the country. The Met Office issued additional alerts for snow and ice that were expected to cause significant disruptions over the coming days. Forecasters warned that temperatures could drop below freezing, particularly on Friday and Saturday.

In light of these conditions, a yellow weather warning for snow and ice was extended across several areas, including the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, and the North East. Furthermore, an amber warning for heavy snow showers—indicating a likelihood of widespread disruption—was issued for regions in the Highlands of Scotland, including Moray and Aberdeenshire. This warning is set to be in effect from noon on Saturday until noon the following day, with predictions of snow accumulation ranging from 10 to 20cm at lower elevations and up to 40cm on higher grounds.

Travel safety is a paramount concern, with officials advising drivers in affected areas to equip their vehicles with a winter emergency kit. This should include essentials such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, and a car charger, to adequately prepare for potential hazards on the roads.

In response to the increasingly severe cold weather, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has escalated cold weather health alerts to ‘amber’ status across England. This upgrade reflects concerns for vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, who are more susceptible to health risks in such harsh climatic conditions. Previous yellow alerts in the Midlands and South have seen a similar elevation to amber, as the frigid temperatures are likely to have a notable impact on health services.

As the nation edges into the new year, the combination of celebratory events and the powerful winter climate presents both excitement and caution. While many revel in festive traditions such as the New Year’s swims, it is imperative for all to remain vigilant and informed about safety measures in light of the advanced winter weather forecasts.

Our Thoughts

The incidents described in the article underscore the critical importance of adhering to health and safety regulations during cold water events. To prevent accidents, event organizers should ensure proper risk assessments are conducted, as required by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Warnings about hazardous weather conditions and the risks associated with cold water swimming should be clearly communicated to participants.

Additionally, the organizers could implement measures such as pre-event briefings on water safety and the dangers of cold exposure, as well as having adequately trained lifeguards present. The tragic incidents highlight a failure to heed safety warnings, contravening the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which mandates ensuring the health and safety of participants.

To mitigate future risks, a stricter compliance framework should be established for such events, including the requirement to monitor weather conditions and restrict participation when safety is compromised. Furthermore, employing measures like mandatory swim tests for participants could enhance safety, ensuring that only capable swimmers partake in potentially dangerous conditions. Education on recognizing the signs of hypothermia and rip currents should also be prioritized in these events.
